Graveyard of the Atlantic & the Chicamacomico Station
Learn More About Maritime CultureThe 19,000 square foot facility that is the only one of its kind in the world - a museum dedicated to the preservation of shipwrecks and maritime culture. Located next to the ferry docks in Hatteras Village, it is the culmination of a dream between public and private interests. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is a long-standing dream of Hatteras Island in tribute to the seafaring people who trod the beaches before us. It will contain educational material on the golden age of piracy, shipping, U-boats and WW II submarine warfare and the Civil War. For more information call (252) 986-2995 or visit the web site. Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station With its two stations and five outbuildings, Chicamacomico (pronounced chik-a-ma-COM-i-co) is the most complete site of remaining life-saving stations in North Carolina and one of the nation’s most complete sites. This site is located on Hatteras Island in the village of Rodanthe on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The 1911 Station has displays, artifacts, photographs, exhibits and video presentations for the public to view. During the summer months, programs, book signings, open house events, and other special events are offered. For more information on these programs visit the website or check our calendar of events. The Beach Apparatus Drill reenactment had been performed at this site for sixteen years by the NPS until 1994, when the Chicamacomico Historical Association took over. After a brief suspension of the drill (2002 - 2004), we are very pleased to announce that the drill is back! Chicamacomico is the only place in the nation to perform the complete drill on a regular basis, and the only place on the planet where it is performed by teams of active-duty U.S. Coast Guard.
