The pristine, uncrowded beaches of Hatteras Island are a beautiful backdrop for your destination wedding ceremony. Popular sites include the beach behind oceanfront vacation homes and the beach area in front of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. If you choose to get married on the beach you must get a permit from the National Park Service. The permit costs $100. Make sure they receive your application at least 30 days prior to your event. This location is for simple weddings only: You cannot bring wedding accoutrements such as flowers, garlands, chairs, arches and rice or birdseed onto the beach. For further questions or to apply please call 252-473-2111 or visit www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/wedding-permits.htm.
[#2] What does the event fee & security deposit cover? As with any event venue or facility, there is an event fee and security deposit associated with the rental of an event home for a wedding. Most homes have a $1,000 event fee with a $1,000 refundable security deposit. The event fee is put in place for the additional use during the event itself. Please understand that the normal number of people in a weekly occupancy is far less than during an event. This fee also covers a light clean of the home and extra trash removal after the event. All trash must be secured in trash bags and placed in the driveway. The event fee does not cover damages to the property, moving furniture back to it’s original place, excessive carpet cleaning, or excessive trash removal. The security deposit is not optional when renting a home for an event. We reserve the right to schedule a walk through at the time of check-in and check-out with the leaseholder. You will be notified in writing of any damages to the property. Pending a post check-out inspection, your security deposit will be returned to you in the form of a business check within 45 days of the day you check-out.
[#3] What do I need to be legally married on Hatteras Island? To be legally married in the state of North Carolina, you will need to obtain a North Carolina marriage license. You can get a marriage license at any Register of Deeds office in North Carolina. Hatteras Island is part of Dare County, and the Dare County Register of Deeds is located in Manteo. You will need to bring proof of your social security number and a driver’s license or valid photo ID. The fee is $50 and the license must be used within 60 days of issuance. The address is: Dare County Justice Center,
[#4] Are there Noise Ordinances in the town that will affect my reception? Dare County’s noise ordinance is from 11pm to 7am. Although they have these set hours, they define noise as: “Any sound which endangers or injures the safety or health of humans or animals, or annoys or disturbs a reasonable person of normal sensitivities, or endangers or injures personal or real property.” This means that if you are disturbing someone’s peace of mind, no matter what time of day, the disturbed persons have the right to call the authorities. Our suggestion is that during the course of the week, notify your neighbors of your plans. Let them know the date, the time, and maybe even invite them. Most of the surrounding homes will probably be rental houses, but there are a handful of local residents close to some as well. Most of the time, by making everyone aware of your event, there will be no surprises and it will avoid conflict. At 11pm, please tone down your celebration or take it inside the home.
[#5] Where should my guests park? Due to the size of the lots, many of our event homes do not offer enough parking spaces for all of your guests and it is illegal to park on the street. All parking at the home must be in allocated spaces and not in undesignated areas, including lawns. You are welcome use any of our three Hatteras Realty offices for additional guest parking. Each office offers additional space and many couples solve their parking problem by hiring a bus or van transportation to shuttle their guests from the lot to the wedding location. For a complete list of transportation services, please visit out concierge page: Transportation.
[#6] What do your recommend in the event of inclement weather? If Dare County authorities order a mandatory evacuation due to inclement weather, you will be required to comply. In the event of an evacuation you will be notified by our office and must turn in your keys prior to leaving the Island. Refunds cannot be made due to inclement weather. Fortunately, trip insurance is an affordable, viable alternative that does cover you for lost time due to mandatory evacuation. We highly recommend purchasing the trip insurance for all reservations. In the event that there is inclement weather, and not a mandatory evacuation, you will want to have a “plan B” in place for your special day. Please understand that we are subject to harsh weather conditions including heavy wind, nor’easters and tropical storms. Depending on the size of the event house and the number of guests, the wedding may be able to be moved inside the home. If the guest size is larger than what the home can accommodate for a wedding, you will want to check into using a restaurant or the Hatteras Island Civic Center for your back up plan. The event team can assist you in securing a secondary indoor location or back-up plan in the case of inclement weather.
[#7] Are we allowed to decorate the home for the wedding? As long as you are not doing any damage to the home, you are welcome to decorate the home as you like. The natural backdrop of Hatteras Island is beautiful and previous brides have found that less is more. Decorations such as white Christmas lights, tulle and simple floral arrangements add an elegant touch to the already wonderful surroundings. If you rent an event home with a pool you can place battery operated floating candles in the water. Please refrain from putting real floating candles or any flowers in the pools as they can be damaging to the filters. For an added island feel you can use white star fish or sand dollars as beachy accents on your tables. There is so much that you can do. Have fun and be creative, but remember to be respectful of the home and natural surroundings.
[#8] Are we required to obtain a special permit if we plan to serve alcohol at our reception? When you rent a vacation home, it is considered your property for the week that you have reserved and no permits are issued for consumption of alcohol on the property. If the event group is just serving alcohol to their guests at no charge, then the homeowner’s insurance policy should kick in if any issues occur. There should never be a case of guests selling alcohol at the homes as that is when permitting and additional insurance needs to be purchased. If there is a company catering the event and they are providing the alcohol they must have a license and insurance. Most established catering companies will gladly supply you with a copy of their policy and license.
[#9] Are we required to purchase temporary/event liability insurance? Hatteras Realty does not require that you purchase temporary/event liability insurance, however if you are having a large event it may be a good decision for extra coverage. We recommend contacting the Mollie Fearing Agency in Manteo. They are able to write up a custom plan for the day of your event. The agency can be reached at 252-473-3476 or on the web at molliefearing.com.
[#10] Does the event team at Hatteras Realty provide planning services? The event team at Hatteras Realty provides you with an event coordinator. You can use that person as a source of information. Planning a destination wedding is not always easy and it helps having a local contact to pass on vendor information and help guide you with your questions. If you are looking for someone to help with floral arrangements, decide where to seat your Uncle Ned, or direct the happenings of your wedding day, you will need to hire a wedding planner.
