Cape Hatteras National Seashore has been approved for a new day use area in Buxton and a soundside access along Highway 12 between Avon & Buxton. These two new parking areas will allow for safer access for residents and visitors to access either the beach or soundside.

Buxton Day Use Area

A new day use area will be built in Buxton at the end of Old Lighthouse Road allowing residents and locals easier access to the beach. The parking area will be built in two phases. Phase 1 will include clearing the roadway and opening the entrance to the site, installing about 50 parking spaces, and adding a “Mobi-mat” walkway which will provide handicap access over to the beach. Phase 2 will include the installation of a public restroom and the parking spaces will be outlined.

Kite Point Soundside Access

Kite-boarders, windsurfers, and other watersport enthusiast will benefit from the new sound access at Kite Point (just south of Canadian Hole). The new parking area will have about 50 spaces and a paved entrance to the lot. This new parking area will take cars off of the side of the highway, allowing for a safer access for folks wanting to access the soundside and those driving along Highway 12.

Both projects are projected to be completed and open to the public by Memorial Day. The time line of completing these projects will be weather dependent.
