Anglers from across the country head to Hatteras Island each November for the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament, a tradition dating back to 1958 and billed by the club as the largest surf fishing tournament in the world. The 68th annual tournament returns November 4–7, 2026.
The competition brings together 120 teams of six anglers for two days of surf fishing along the beaches of Hatteras Island, with morning and afternoon sessions on Thursday and Friday. The festivities also include a sponsors' tackle show and Friday evening awards celebration. On Saturday, the Bob Bernard Open Individual Tournament gives individual anglers an opportunity to compete, with advance registration required.
Even if you aren't competing, it's a fun weekend to be on Hatteras Island and experience one of the traditions that has helped make the island legendary among surf anglers.
