Experience the Outer Banks at one of the best times of year for birding during Wings Over Water Encore, a special winter session of the popular Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival. The December weekend is dedicated to birding and is timed to take advantage of the arrival of wintering waterfowl and migratory birds throughout northeastern North Carolina’s wildlife refuges.
Guided excursions take visitors to some of the region’s best wildlife-viewing areas, including Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon Inlet and Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge. Depending on the excursion, participants may encounter ducks, geese, swans, shorebirds, raptors and other winter wildlife while exploring the quieter side of the Outer Banks.
For Hatteras Island visitors, the guided programs at Pea Island are especially convenient and offer a wonderful opportunity to experience the island’s natural beauty beyond the beach.
