We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Knotty Whale. The home was beautiful and well-maintained. We had everything we needed and enjoyed the pool, hot tub and easy access to the beach. We would definitely stay at this property again!

We loved our third stay at the Knotty Whale. It’s under new management this year, but still has the same charm we’ve always loved. New surprises are the complimentary Level II EV charging/NEMA 14/50 in the car port along with the new LR sofas and updated bidets throughout. Well appointed kitchen. And a colorful electric fireplace.
The pool was clean and toasty warm for our stay. The hot tub has ocean and star views at night with some shelter from the wind.
We enjoy the location and privacy and lack of crowds. You can hear the ocean all day long from the house. We enjoyed breakfast outside on the deck watching the sunrise over the ocean and it is just a short walk north past a few houses the undeveloped Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge area, Pea Island is secluded and perfect for long walks, fishing and letting the dog run free while enjoying miles of natural deserted beach without crowds.
We don't surf but it seems perfect for that as others noted.

Beautiful and very private. It’s my new favorite place!!! I will be going back for sure!!! I loved that it was dog friendly and very clean. Updated and was very relaxed atmosphere. I loved that there were no chain stores or restaurants. It was perfection for our family!!!

The location and overall home layout is nice. Unfortunately the beds, linens and towels need updating. A huge part of vacation is comfort!! If they make these switches it will be perfect!

Steps away from the beach. The house was very clean and accommodated 7 adults! The pool and hot tub was an added touch. This is the 2nd time my family has rented the Knotty Whale and we will be returning for another vacation stay in OBX

The Knotty Whale was fantastic! We loved being in Rodanthe. You are completely out of the touristy area so the beach was never crowded. There were times we had the entire beach to ourselves! It was great that we could bring our dogs with us. The unit itself was comfortable but a little worn, but I wasn’t looking for a glamorous house. It was “beachy”. If you are mobility impaired, this would be a tough unit for you. It has 36 stairs to get to the main floor. 36 stairs every time you take the dogs out. 36 stairs every time you go to the beach. 36 stairs every time you go out exploring. (I averaged 10x up and down the stairs every day, but on the positive side, I think I actually lost weight on this vacation! lol) Pros: Location Able to bring dogs On beach Hot tub and pool Cons: Master bedroom mattress needs to be replaced 36 stairs to get on the main level. Beach was beautiful but surf was too powerful for us to go in and swim in the ocean Limited restaurant choices within 10 min driving Overall we loved it here. I would not hesitate to stay at the Knotty Whale again.

We loved the open views from the common areas - living, eating and kitchen. Lots of windows and an open feel. The decks, hot tub and two bedrooms also share the views. Perfect for long quiet beach walks. Just walk north and in 5 min you are on endless miles of the undeveloped beaches of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. South is about a mile beach walk to the Rodanthe Pier.

After viewing reviews, I was nervous. But when we arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. There was plenty of cookware! No need to take extra like we did. The couches are different than what are pictured. They’re still comfy though! The bathrooms are great sizes, nothing special about the tubs but the hot tub makes up for them. The water pressure is lacking but that is to be expected! I have thick hair, so just be patient and spend a little extra time rinsing. There’s a beautiful large white female dog that will greet you on the beach around 9am. She’s lovely and very kind. She enjoys a good back scratch. The location is perfect. You’re basically right in the middle of everything. You pass Bodie Lighthouse getting to the house. Hatteras is right down the road. The ferry to Ocracoke is a little further down from Hatteras. Then you have Currituck a little over an hour ride. All worth the visit and the drives aren’t bad at all. Obviously we missed out on a lot since we went during the winter but we had a blast. I do and already have recommended this home to serve as your home away from home for your next getaway.

Brought my family of six to this beach home for Labor Day weekend. The home location, size, and amenities were perfect for us! We enjoyed the location and watched the sunrise each morning from the upper deck.

The home is very well laid out and convenient. Everything was very clean and, for the most part, well maintained. View of the ocean is fantastic other than some power lines and a couple of other houses. Literally a 1 minute walk to a shared, but not busy, beach. Pool and hot tub were nice on days that we just wanted to have quiet time. Also, being on a dead end road, there was very little traffic by the house. We had a very nice stay.

The Knotty Whale became our home for spring vacation. My husband and I, our children and grandchildren stayed for one week. We had an amazing time and have so many wonderful memories. The home was beautiful and the view of the ocean from the decks was spectacular. Thank you for allowing your house to become our home.

We enjoyed our stay The house clean and presented like the photos. There are a few minor repairs needed. The stove top cooks on high all the time. Corner cabinets doors in the kitchen are coming off the hinges, blinds in the master bedroom and bath on the first floor are incomplete, table in master up stairs is broken and the dryer takes two cycles to dry anything, There is limited large pans for cooking for a larger group, number of towels provided are enough for a day so your doing laundry daily. There’s a trick to locking the doors which we don’t know the first night, you have to lift on the handle in order for the lock to turn. I know I listed a number of items but they are all minor things and can be easily addressed and did not have a negative impact on our stay or opinion of the rental. Other rentals we’ve stayed in had a guest book. This would be a great idea as previous guest and future can write in it and leave tips and experiences for new guests. Items of restaurants, must see or do’s etc.

If you are looking for a peaceful get away on a beautiful beach this is a great place to visit. The home was clean. Had a great view. Right on the beach. We were the only ones on the beach most of the time. There is a convenience store walking distance if you need to grab any items.

Wonderful company to work with, if you need anything they are right on it!! Great house with a very nice pool area and hot tub! Love love location! Downstairs air needed to be cooler, if set at 68 it was 78, couldn’t get it cooler than 78.

This is the third time we have stayed at The Knotty Whale 120. We are booked for next year too. We love this house and location. It is our happy place! The sofa has been replaced and a mattress topper was added to the bedroom on the top floor. My only suggestions would be mattress toppers for the other queen rooms, new blinds for the queen bedroom and bathroom on the lower level, and make sure all doors lock and unlock. The house was clean and ready for move in and we can't wait until next year!

Fantastic ocean views from most locations in the home. The beach access is within steps and never crowded even at peak time periods. Short walk to pristine and rustic Pea Island beach access. Great for a private long walk. The kitchen is well equipped. Only suggestion would be for the owner to provide access to a gas grill and upgrade mattresses in 3 rooms. First encounter with Vacasa as a rental agent and the experience was all positive. The home was clean on arrival and had to communicate with the Vacasa team on some operational issues and their responses were timely and appropriate.

The house was exactly as pictured. House was very clean and well-appointed. It had everything you could ever need in the kitchen. Location was great to the beach. If I had one thing I would change it is more seating in the living area. It sleeps alot of people but the living room only seats five at a time. It was very comfortable and I will definitely book again and again. Vacasa was responsive and helpful when contacted.

The pictures don't do the views justice. Beautiful sunrise every morning from the kitchen table with huge windows and tons of natural sunlight. You can even catch the sunset as well from the master balcony. House was spotless and great communication with the property manager on check in and throughout stay. The inside was equally impressive. We went in the winter so was great to have such a relaxing atmosphere inside as well when not listening to the sound of the ocean and watching the stars from the hot tub. Would definitely recommend. Thanks for a great stay!

We have some memories about our vacation on the island and how we coped with the electricity going out around 2:00 am and NC12 being closed. I have 2 friends that use breathing machines and we all thankful when the power was restored. We are so grateful to everyone on the island!! Our family stayed at The Knotty Whale for a week in February. The house was very clean and kitchen is well-appointed. We had amazing views of the ocean and enjoyed watching the dolphins swim by. It was great relaxing in the hot tub in the cold winter wind. The only minor complaint was the mattress in the master bedroom was rather thin and lacked support. Overall, we highly recommend and would stay in this house again!

We absolutely love staying at High Hopes and look forward to coming again. The decks are great, and the gates on each level are wonderful for keeping pets safe. The view is magnificent. We have stayed at High Hopes for a number of years and the location, view, house and amenities are wonderful.
