Description

Tucked away on Colony Drive in Salvo, this cozy oceanfront cottage will truly put your mind at ease. Simple yet sophisticated, Idle Minds offers three bedrooms and two baths, ocean views, and charming interior design. An outdoor shower comes in handy for a quick rinse after a trip to the beach, and a charcoal grill off the back deck where everyone hangs out makes cooking out fun. There are two entry points to this cottage: one in the front, and one in the back. The front stairs lead up to a sundeck that overhangs the drive, and the back stairs lead up to a larger sundeck with a picnic table and hot tub. As you enter the home from the front, you might not make it past the first room as a huge couch, flatscreen TV, Blu-ray player, and surround sound make this a premier spot to flop down and lounge the day away. A slew of board games and movies put the icing on the entertainment cake for both kids and adults alike. Moving into the living room, a high vaulted ceiling really opens the place up. A couple of comfy chairs are perfect for reading the morning paper in, and a lovely couch and coffee table are centered around a marvelous fireplace creating an intimate setting. Just off the living room, you will find a spacious bedroom with a king bed and flatscreen TV. There is a full bathroom next to this room that is accessible from the bedroom and the living room. As you proceed to the back of the house, there is an eight-person dining room table that looks out toward the ocean through sliding glass doors. The kitchen has all matching appliances, including a cooktop stove on the island bar with bar stools, allowing you to socialize while you prepare meals. You'll find another four-people counter height table in the breakfast nook, and back entrance leading to the sundeck and carport. Upstairs you'll find bedrooms two and three. The second bedroom has a pyramid-style bed and is connected to bedroom three by a bathroom with a jetted tub. Bedroom three is an open loft space with a king-size bed. There is a sitting area that overlooks the living room, and the bed is tucked away in the back. Off this room, there are sliding glass doors that provide access to a second-level deck. From this deck, you can walk up one more level to the crow's nest that offers amazing ocean views of the pristine Salvo beaches.

Things to Know:
Guests have access to the Club Hatteras Pool Facility, located at the Avon office address: 41156 Hwy 12, Avon, NC 27915. The pool is generally open from May 24 to September 8, from 10 AM to 6 PM. Please note that the operation of community pools is subject to the discretion of the state inspector, management, and/or the HOA. As a result, the availability schedule may change without prior notice.

I felt we got the most for our money with this home. It comfortably fit myself, my parents, two kids & 2 dogs. For the area, it was hard to find something in my price range that included a hot tub. We found what we were looking for with idle minds! We fell in love with the home immediately, and upon walking in it smelled SO clean :) it had more than expected in the kitchen (be sure to check ALL the cabinets). Also included in a closet in the den were cleaning supplies such as a vacuum, mop, broom and dustpan which was very convenient and helpful. Also would like to mention that the outdoor grill has been updated & included the smoke chimney. The only negatives I have are that I wish we had known how steep the dune walk was. My mother had to use the beach access instead, luckily only a 5 minute walk. The other negative is that my pups had spurs in their feet all week from the yard, but the neighboring yards were clear. A little more lawn care and this place is perfect! Thank you sm!!!!

We loved staying here. Trisha, in the office, was so helpful. Maintenance was so great. We had a problem with the charcoal grill. We called for help and maintenance was there within the hour. We hope to stay here again.

The house was in a beautiful location, love hearing the ocean at night! The views are amazing! It was great getting a starter kit for the kitchen and toilet paper for each bathroom. It gave us time to relax and then go to the store to buy what we need the next day! I called for extra towels and they were promptly brought over! We will be back!

Idle Minds was a great winter getaway for my family! We found a TON of great shells on the beach since not many people were around. My son enjoyed fishing and caught a dozen Dogfish and 3 rays! The hot tub was a nice way to stay warm on the cold nights. The house had even more amenities than in the listing- games, spices, coffee filters, etc We brought our dogs and my *only* negative comment was that we weren’t warned about the gnarly thorns on the cacti in the yard. Ouch! Once we found out where they were the most prominent we steered clear!

Just what we needed!

There ended up being a snow storm the day we arrived making travel difficult and most businesses were shut down. This property had everything we needed to still have a amazing visit with our Marine son. We grilled, played games, enjoyed the hot tub, and braved the cold to walk the beach.

This is my 7th year spending a week on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in December (for the cheaper rates and also the quietness )and this house was my 2nd time booking. Last time was like 3 years ago and since then the owners have put a metal roof on the house, new siding and a new hot tub which was I thought much larger than the previous one. Jets on the new hot tub were really nice.The house had no issues of major concern that I noticed although the sliding doors in the upstairs bedroom going out to the deck were a bit difficult to slide but maybe just needed some lubricating or adjustments. Kitchen was sufficient including everything that I needed . I take a friend with me each year and the rooms that I do not use I usually shut the doors and leave a note for the cleaners just as a heads up to let them know nothing was touched in those rooms. It's just a courtesy that I do when booking these homes. I did notice a few bulbs on the outside that should be replaced as they were out. I like the surround sound theater room which I did use 3 years ago but did not use this time but watched the TV in the living room. Heating system (not fireplace) was adequate but , as always , heat rises so I turn the ceiling fan on low in the downstairs living room to disperse the air/heat. It's open with a balcony looking down into the living room. If I had to tell the owners on future improvements or upgrades It would be in the downstairs bathroom . Only other thing that was not working was the upstairs jetted bathtub and you could not turn the jets on for the tub because the knob was off. It does have a shower though for the tub. It's an "oceanfront" house so short walk to the ocean and it has multiple decks to see that beautiful sunrise in the morning. Deer are all around and you see them just standing in the yards. But I plan on booking this house again for December 2025 for another week.

Location was ideal for activities at both ends of Outer Banks. Property was located as close as possible to the beach. Views from deck were great. Very peaceful property.

Great house!!

I would 100% stay here again!! It was clean, well stocked, perfect amount of space for us, and perfect location. There are only 3 things I would suggest; 1. the upstairs bedroom sliding glass door was difficult to open every time, 2. the clothes washer made very strange noises while running, and 3. maybe trim down some of the trees in the back so they don't cover up the view. Otherwise, it is a really great house!!

All the comforts of home. Well maintained and great location. Shaded and close to the water. Plenty of options in the kitchen and the furniture was clean and comfy. We were here at an unusually cold time and made good use of the fireplace and hot tub. Would stay here again!

This was our second time at Idle Minds and we just love it! We’ve already booked again for next year. It’s super comfy, with a nice private path to the beach, lots of room for lounging, and very dog friendly! The only thing that could make it better would be if they put a little gate at the steps on the deck from the bedroom so that the dogs could hang out without fear of them running off. Other than that, it’s perfect!

This is our second year coming to this property and am already planning the next trip! We love this home so much that we dream of the opportunity to own it someday, if it was ever for sale. Some small details that we love, the back yard feels like a secret garden in the trees. I enjoyed reading there and in the two chairs on the second floor (especially when it was too windy to be outside, you could still see the dunes). The clothes line under the home is super helpful. The brand new hot tub is perfection! It feels secluded the way they designed the deck. All of the deck floors connect to each other which is very helpful, especially if with others and wanting to avoid disruption. Love the sunrise light coming in the second floor suite if the curtains are left open. The kitchen is setup perfectly to cook if you are looking to. Plenty of space. My husband also really enjoys the speakers and quality sound for the front TV room and living room. The Salvo area beaches are beautiful and the town is very quiet. Exactly what we were looking for, won't rent anywhere else when wanting to stay on this side of the outer banks.

Great, Quiet Escape

We loved this. I'm from the area and always love to come back! It is definitely pet friendly but be aware that the front and sides of the yard are off limits due to the sand spurs. The back yard was perfect for our pup. The hot tub was fantastic! The beds were comfy. Kitchen well stocked. I left my watch behind on accident and Emily was the best at communicating with me and getting it back to me. We loved it and will definitely be back.

I spent 5 days and 4 nights at idle minds, it was a much needed relaxing getaway. Home was very clean and welcoming. The view from the top deck was amazing and I couldn’t get enough of the hot tub. The walk to the beach is very short and scenic as well, even seen a few deer on a couple of mornings.

This house was perfect for our stay in January. The house was warm and cozy with the easy to use gas fireplace. The weather was warm enough to enjoy the beach and hot tub. We loved our stay at Idle Minds!

This was the perfect house for our winter trip in January. The gas fireplace kept the house cozy and warm. The short walk to the beach with our own path was great! The house had everything we needed for a great family vacation!

So this was our first time staying at this particular house and in this area of Hatteras. We are usually down near Hatteras Village, but the house we usually stay had been sold and was no longer for rent. I have to say that this house far exceeded our expectations. It is lovely, well cared for, but also very dog friendly. We loved having our own private walkway to the beach as we noticed that a lot of other houses did not. The hot tub was awesome. The beds were more comfortable than any beach house we’ve stayed in. We loved the two decks. The upper one was a great place for star watching. We were able to find two wonderful seafood shops in the area that were very different, but seemed equally friendly and good. CJ’s produce was a wonderful find. Definitely the best place for all of our fresh produce needs and she even had fresh eggs! The only thing we had a little trouble with was finding a restaurant that we particularly liked, but we were super spoiled with Hatteras Sol down at the very end of the island. We will need more research there. Over all, we loved the house and the area, and would definitely stay there again.

We were able to find two wonderful seafood shops in the area that were very different, but seemed equally friendly and good. CJ’s produce was a wonderful find. Definitely the best place for all of our fresh produce needs and she even had fresh eggs! The only thing we had a little trouble with was finding a restaurant that we particularly liked, but we were super spoiled with Hatteras Sol down at the very end of the island. We will need more research there. Over all, we loved the house and the area, and would definitely stay there again.

Have used Outer beaches over last several years, and rentals always worked well. Kitchen was well stocked. Location was close to everything (restaurants, Groceries, etc). This review was submitted while the home was managed by a different property management company.
